The XVII Festival of European Cinema in Colombia (EUROCINE 2011) is a series of events over one month spread between four Colombian cities, beginning in Bogota at the end of April. The festival, which features mainly independent European films, will then pass through Medellin and Cali, before ending in Barranquilla.
The festival was created in 1994 as an alternative space for exhibiting European films, with the aim of bringing a taste of European culture to the Colombian public. The films displayed in the festival are broken into a number of categories, with an "Official" section displaying films of various genres that are being highlighted at the festival. Other sections included the "In Focus", "Art and Cinema", "Tribute", "Europe in Shorts", and "Eurocine Community" categories. The goal of the "Eurocine Community" section is to bring some of the festival's films to members of the public who are not able to afford theater prices, through showings in city cultural centers.
